The Request

I've been asked to write a poem,
For the Civil Partnership of my friends,
And I hope to make them happy,
Thats all I want to do in the end.

So I get down to the writing,
And my friend he does phone up.
We talk about so many things,
And then right at the end he says,
"In the poem that you're writing,
In your lovely poem,
There's just one thing you mustn't do,
Don't mention God!"

Gobsmacked was I,
Atheist that I am,
That the deity is not allowed on board.
No mention of that place which may,
Or may not be in the sky,
Or anything angelic,
That may sort of wander by.
Even that bloke who's down below,
May not get a mention,
But then of course in writing it,
That would not be my intention.

So I'm limited to what I write
But maybe I'll achieve it,
Actually I've written two,
If you can believe it.

Now I'm looking forward,
To the "wedding" of the year.
I'm nearly ready for it,
And my invitation's here.

I'll be nervous when I'm reading,
And I hope my voice won't crack.
Coz my love I have for my two friends,
Will never ever lack...
